Traditional Japanese Drinks

In 1995, while living on a small island in southern Japan, I was introduced to many traditions and delicacies. It was here where I gained an appreciation for sake (rice wine), umeshu (plum wine) and shochu (distilled spirit similar to vodka). I loved how pure, fresh and clean each tasted. It’s no wonder that the word “Kanpai”, the Japanese equivalent for cheers, became embedded in my vocabulary! Fast forward 23 years and I’m so happy to be able to go into my neighbourhood liquor store to find a growing selection of these products on the shelf. There is nothing more refreshing than a glass of umeshu on the rocks after a long day at the office! Laurie MacKay
