5 Spots to Eat and Drink During a Chinook

Made By Marcus 17 Avenue Calgary
Made By Marcus is the perfect place to head when the chinook hits Calgary this weekend.

There are plenty of reasons why we should feel lucky to live in Calgary. Having the Rocky Mountains just a short drive away, a mayor that most other cities in North America wish they had running their respective cities and, of course, chinooks, are just three that immediately come to mind. After the cold streak we've just had, I think we're all excited to shed some layers, get outside and enjoy some well-deserved sunshine.

With warmer temperatures come plenty of reasons to eat and drink, too. Here are five places to check out over the next few days while the sun is shining, people are out and about and, most importantly, your longjohns are sitting happily in your dresser at home.

Warm, sunny days can call for many things, but if you have a sweet tooth that needs satiating then ice cream is an absolute must. Made By Marcus' flagship location on 17th Avenue S.W. offers a long list of signature ice cream flavours like Raspberry Cardamom and Dulce Banana Walnut as well as funky sundaes that are equally delicious to millenials Snapchat-ing their desserts as they are to the rest of us. The S'more sundae comes garnished with a house-made marshmallow that's torched to order. Leave that jacket at home, grab a sundae and stroll down 17th Avenue with me this weekend, alright folks?

National 17

There are plenty of Nationals around Calgary, but the 17th Avenue location is the only one that boasts an all-season patio. It shouldn't take very long for all of the snow to disappear from this beer hall's patio that gets copious amounts of sunshine, wrapping around the corner of 5th Street S.W. With over 70 drinks on tap and a happy hour (3-6 p.m.) that offers $5 craft beer, glasses of wine, cocktails and more, I'm sure you can find more than a few reasons to snag a seat on this patio over the next handful of days.

One of the city's newest restaurants offers a thoughtful and refined dining experience in the heart of Central Memorial Park. Open for lunch, dinner and brunch on the weekends, Provision is a great spot to take a few friends or the family to on the weekend, and then soak up the warm rays while walking through the park. You can maybe even throw a snowball or two or build a snowperson with the little ones! Warm weather or not, make sure to try the satisfying smoked baby potatoes with brown butter, greens and poached egg. You'll be happy you did.

Much like Provision, River Cafe is nestled into a currently winter wonderland setting in Prince's Island Park. The cabin-like aesthetic gives off a cozy vibe akin to dining amidst the Rocky Mountains and the lagoon that's just steps away is a perfect place for a little skate pre or post-dining. Lace up after weekend brunch (brioche French toast with maple pecan butter, anyone?) or take a romantic walk through the park before popping in for dinner. To be honest, spending time at River is always a treat, regardless of temperature or season.

When the temperature rises unexpectedly in the middle of winter, most Beltline residents know to flock to this Calgary institution as early in the day as possible to secure their seats on its famous all-season patio. Whether you're sitting down for a classic grass-fed beef burger with all the fixings (mushrooms, cheddar, bacon et al.) or just cheers-ing with pints of local craft beer with some friends, this patio is going to be a guaranteed good time as long as this warming chinook sticks around town.
