Eats and Drinks of the Week - March 28
Picks from the Ship and Anchor, Bensonhurst Pizza Co., Calgary Shawarma and an Okanagan rosé
Chicago Deep Dish Pizza — Bensonhurst Pizza Co.
The first time I ever had real Chicago deep dish pizza (not the pizza from the local chain of pizza joints that is mediocre at best) was in, well, Chicago. When deep dish is done right, it is a thing of beauty. Now that Bensonhurst has opened on 17th Avenue, you can pop in to order whatever kind of pizza you love, whether it's Neapolitan-style, New York-style, the list goes on and on. This big, saucy, cheesy, meaty pie of a pizza can definitely feed 4 hungry people, if not more. It’s not an everyday kind of meal, but feel free to indulge in this one once and awhile.

Le Vieux Pin Vaila Rose - Okanagan Valley
A pretty little number with cranberry and black pepper on the nose. Quite dry with enough acids to be versatile with food, and still have a yummy strawberry ice cream finish.

Pig Roast – Ship and Anchor
This makes for a great evening out with friends. Expect a whole roast pig, natural dripping gravy, caramelized onions, warm apple sauce, roast potatoes in duck fat with garlic and thyme, creamy fennel coleslaw and classic slaw, artisan bread & butter and fresh fruit bamboo skewers on a big board. Three of us tried our best but still couldn’t quite finish it! A great value at $25 per head.

Chicken and Beef Shawarma – Calgary Shawarma
And it's Calgary Shawarma (at the corner of 5 St. and 11 Ave. SW) for the win. Omar and his family run a friendly joint doing simple fair with simply better ingredients and offer it in a manner that will guarantee your return. It's easy to overlook shawarma as a type of fast food, but when done right it is a heavenly experience. I recommend the Mix Wrap (Chicken & Beef), add Sambal Oelek and hummus and get it served with all the tidy fixings.
$10.50 at Calgary Shawarma, 555 11 Ave. SW
