Paul John Edited, India

What do you imagine when you think of Indian whisky? Be prepared to be very impressed when you try Paul John single malts. From Goa, on India’s west coast, and using 6-row barley from the foothills of the Himalayas, are a range of three non-chill filtered, highly awarded whiskies. All bottled at 46% ABV, Brilliance is unpeated, Bold is peated, and in the middle is the slightly peated Edited. The peat is very subtle, giving an extraordinary whisky that starts with aromas of honey and dark chocolate and a lovely gentle smokiness, and gives way to a rich coffee-chocolate with a hint of mint, and a long satisfying finish. Garzon Albarino 2015, Uruguay

garzonalbarino.jpeg

On the southern tip of Uruguay just 11 kilometred from the Atlantic Ocean you’ll find the Garzon winery, LEED certified and one of the first outside North America to meet the stringent requirements of the U.S. Green Building Council. 2015 was a very warm year so this Albarino is a surprising 14.5% ABV, but you’d never know – the wine is beautifully made, and refreshing. This Albarino has great structure, and is full-bodied and rich yet still has a mouth-watering finish. You’ll taste soft white fruit like peaches and apricots with a bright citrus acidity of clementines. It’s perfect to cut through heavy spreads like hummus and pita bread, and ideal with calamari and cured salmon, yet rich enough to befriend pork loin and chops. CSPC +783126 $27.00

William Hardy Chardonnay 2016, Limestone Coast, Australia

william_hardy.jpeg

Some people deserve to have wines named for them, and Bill Hardy is certainly high on that list. For his own range of William Hardy wines he has chosen his favourite region of the Limestone Coast, Padthaway and Wrattonbully in particular in the southeast corner of South Australia. Here you find the prized terra rossa soil and a Mediterranean climate that have combined to create a wine with the richness of Aussie wine but a savoury and dryer, European-style finish. This elegant Chardonnay is young and bright, with a subtle nose of lemon sherbet and flavours of white stone fruit and a touch of sweet vanilla oak. CSPC +788830 $15
