Lamb Pizza Pop at PostoLamb Pizza Pop – Posto

When I was 21 years old and broke (well, who am I kidding, I’m still broke), pizza pops were a staple in my diet.

Thank goodness I’m a bit older now and can appreciate the finer things in life like this upscale version of my young adulthood topped with a fennel slaw. It will make you feel like a kid again, but happily full and not that guilty about what you just ate!

Jean Leon Cabernet SauvignonJean Leon 2003 Gran Reserva “La Scala” Cabernet Sauvignon, Penedes, Spain

Made from 100 percent cabernet sauvignon (Yes, the 2003 is the current vintage), this 10-year-old cab still packs some fruit with cedar, cola, lilac, menthol and some serious (but balanced) tannin. With the age, a little secondary development is happening-adding some layers of complexity and nuance. Cellar 5-10 more years, or treat yourself and just drink it now or at your next special occasion. Limited quantities, around $60.

Available at select liquor stores.

Roasted Steelhead Trout at Bistro RougeRoasted Steelhead Trout – Bistro Rouge

This dish is perfect for a cold and snowy spring day in Calgary. The melt-in-your-mouth trout is served on a bed of artichokes, asparagus and baby potatoes smothered in a citrus aioli. Together, these two elements are rich, comforting and warm you up before you face the blustery day outside. If you’ve never tried trout before, start with a dish like this to learn trout’s mild taste.

Whole Wheat Blueberry Waffles – Vendome Café

I always find it hard to overcome the nuttiness of whole wheat flour in pancakes and waffles, but Vendome Café’s waffles do it, and do it well. Laced with blueberries and topped with maple syrup and a heavenly vanilla whipped cream, I licked this plate clean. The serving size was just enough to satisfy my mid-day brunch craving along with a well-crafted latte. Darn it, now I’m craving these waffles again!
