Lobster Mac & Cheese – LeVilla on 4th

After eight years in the west of the city, I was really pleased to see LeVilla open a second location in Mission late last year – a great addition to already popular 4th Street SW. It’s easily accessible, and I love the validated parking in the building parkade too!

Upscale food meets a relaxed atmosphere; dine well without having to talk in whispers.

Although famous for their award-winning steaks, you can’t go wrong with LeVilla’s comforting Lobster Mac & Cheese, or their addictive Coquille St Jacques with scallops and mushrooms in a white wine cream sauce – both plate-licking good!

Lobster Mac & Cheese $17 at LeVilla on 4th, 150 1800 4th Street SW, 403-453-3670, levilla.ca/fourth, @LeVillaOn4th

Alfredo Second Pass Shiraz

A singular wine – I’m sure not many have had a Ripasso from shiraz grapes!

Made in the same way, the wine for this limited edition Alfredo Second Pass Shiraz spends three months on the skins and pulp of its big brother, ‘Alfredo Dried Grape Shiraz’, picking up flavours of mature fruit, with rich chocolatey tones that fill the mouth right through to the long finish.

A great value at $16.95, and available in stores across Calgary.

Guava Margarita – Anejo

The margaritas at Anejo are a must-try drink in Calgary. I’m partial to the Guava because it’s sweet but the Chili Coconut has a great bite to it. Both are made using Cazadores Blanco Tequila which is from 100 percent blue agave and great for sipping on its own. Refreshing and perfectly crafted, you’ll find yourself wanting to try all margaritas on the menu.

Margaritas starting at $8.25 at Anejo, 2 2116 4 St. SW, 587-353-2656, anejo.ca, @AnejoYYC

Charcuterie du Jour – Avec Bistro

Avec Head Chef Darnell Japp is always experimenting within French cuisine styles. Though his dishes are meticulously classic, there’s a great sense of fun too. His feature charcuterie when I had it that day was a savory rich house cured duck prosciutto with tart pickled apples, spinach tossed in olive oil and a sharp shaved granna padano. Perfectly lovely.

Nachos – Kildare’s Ale House

Kildare’s nachos are an above average combination of yellow and red corn tortillas chips which get points for being smothered in both cheddar and mozzarella cheeses for gooey goodness. Topped with the usual tomatoes, green onions and jalapenos, these nachos are unique in that you order them by the foot. Ranging from one foot to the monster five foot boat, these nachos will command attention.
