Highwood Dining Room
When did you last have dinner at The Highwood at SAIT? If it’s not in the last couple of years then, like me, you’ve probably forgotten what a great experience it is – and great value, too! You feel a glow that you’re actually helping by eating there, giving students a stage to practise their skills on.
It was a tough choice for starters, but beef carpaccio won as it comes with lobster tempura, smoked mayo and fennel gastrique. Just fabulous! I chose the beet salad with goat cheese mousse, herb oil, and hazelnuts to follow, beautifully presented and tasting exactly as you would hope. For the main, seared organic Tofino salmon with lobster, kale and lentil ragout, and Béarnaise Sauce was a bit of a no-brainer for me – so many of my favourite ingredients in one dish (and yes, I discovered that I could eat lobster twice inone meal!).
Fortunately, I’m not tempted by sweets, pastries and cakes, and there’s a huge selection to choose as many as you like from. I was completely sated, and more than satisfied with my first three courses. Note to self: Really should remember to come here more often!
Open Monday to Thursday, you have a choice of three seatings at 6, 6:30 and 7 p.m.

Franca’s Italian Specialties
Eating at Franca’s is like having dinner in your Italian grandma’s kitchen. Love, warmth and passion are evident, so you’re already predisposed to like whatever arrives on your plate. My favourite dish here is the melanzane parmigiana – thick rounds of eggplant topped with Franca’s fresh tomato sauce, smothered in mozzarella and parmesan, and then baked in the oven until the cheese melts and becomes almost chewy. It’s rich and filling, but it’s mostly vegetables, so it must be good for you?
