Wellington’s of Calgary
I don’t get down south too often and rarely at lunchtimes, so I had never been to Wellington’s of Calgary before. Recently I was invited to lunch there (and to drink Caymus Family Wines), so I ventured into unchartered territory. This seafood cobb salad was excellent at lunchtime; it comes with grilled shrimp, salmon, bacon, egg and mixed greens with a Dijon mustard vinaigrette, and was generous in every respect, but surprise, surprise I still managed to finish every last morsel!

Yellow Door Bistro
I couldn’t decide between the Arctic char and the salmon for dinner at Yellow Door recently, but I made the right choice –Potato Wrapped Salmon is genius! It comes in a big bowl with Poplar Bluff carrots, savoy cabbage, beautifully crunchy snap peas – and joy of joys -Panang lobster curry. The piquant curry was a great contrast to the gentle flavours of the salmon and vegetables, and had just the right amount of heat for me. Another plate-licker!
Home and Away
I couldn’t wait to see the brand new Home & Away, and now having been to check it out, there’s great design touches and dishes that must be tried. Standout for me is the Chili Glazed Squid in a black bean sauce with cashew pieces on top. Humboldt squid are huge and can reach 6 ft, so you might think you’re eating octopus. At Home & Away they’re cooked with a crunch on the outside and not at all chewy inside, but with a sticky, slightly spicy sauce that is completely moreish. While you’re at, share a plate of “popcorn” shrimp with your buds – true to their name, they are jumbo shrimp coated in popcorn! And come with an achiote lime caramel sauce and smoked pepper mayo too to dip into.
