Unculin 2014 DOC Bierzo, Spain
Have you tried the mencia grape from Rias Baxas yet? I have to say, I’m a huge fan, and it’s not too late to start! This wine has very appealing aromas of sweet berries with underlying notes of mulberries, mint and myrtle. You may taste red berries and then before you swallow, you’ll get a sense of something much deeper and more savoury. Unculin is delicate and feminine; this is no in-your-face jam jar, but elegant and smooth, with silky smooth tannins and a long finish. I’d be looking for some rare duck breast with this wine, or a chicken roulade with cranberries and walnuts.

La Mano Mencia Roble 2010
This pretty, floral wine has an alluring nose of red berries with cinnamon and nutmeg spice, and is dry with a bright acidity. It’s a medium bodied wine, with deeper flavours on the mid palate of mulberry (one of my favourite flavours!) and earthy notes, and it still manages to remain perfumed to the mild finish, with a smooth and silky mouth-feel. I’d love to drink this mencia wine with a pork steak or schnitzel, any dish with black olives, and sausage of many different kinds. I’m so enjoying the Bierzo wines available to us now!
