Las Mulas Merlot 2015, Curico, Chile

This organic wine is a great value and a real crowd-pleaser. With a fruity and leafy nose of bramble bushes along with a little mint, this wine is silky smooth on the palate and mouth-filling, with soft and deep flavours of plums and Saskatoon berries. You don’t have to eat anything with it, but if you do, head for lamb sausages with fennel, and if you like a bit of spice then merguez. Add some cooked spinach or lightly sautéed kale with garlic. Layer Cake Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, California

The nose on this wine is so enticing! There are layers of strawberries, prunes, raspberries, a touch of mint, cardamom, on the plate it’s as smooth as silk with plenty of body and substance and flavour – it’s a real crowd pleaser, I could drink a bottle on my own. The wine has very long legs, and goes down very easily. Bring on the rare rib-eye steaks; the slow-cooked Boeuf en Daube, or any beef stew marinated in red wine; a really good burger; eggplant, and baked potatoes – this is comfort wine at its best!
