Be the judge and help crown Calgary’s best burger
For the second year in a row, restaurants across Calgary will battle out for the right to say they have the best burger in the city during YYC Burger Week. From May 2 to 10, 30 restaurants will be serving special burger week burgers in hopes of winning a vote from hungry Calgarians.
This year, the three categories of burgers ($10, $15 and $20) each support a different charity: Made by Momma, Autism Aspergers Friendship Society of Calgary, and the Canadian Mental Health Association. Last year, with only 15 participating restaurants, YYC Burger Week raised $6,400.
You’ll be able to vote online for your favourite burger as well as collect stamps on a YYC Burger Week passport to win prizes.
We had the chance to a get a sneak preview of some of YYC Burger Week’s burgers, and they didn’t disappoint.
Grumans Deli – Bella Burger
Sloppy, juicy and delicious, the Bella Burger at Grumans Deli comes with a side plate of napkins. The ground chuck burger is topped with a portabella mushroom, swiss cheese, tomato confit and a garlic aioli. Vegetarian? No problem, pull out the burger and it’s meatless! ($15)
Market – Meatball Burger
Warning: You might need a bib for this burger! Barely held together by a ciabatta bun, pork meatballs are topped with sautéed kale, Sylvan Star Gouda and a delicious tomato sauce. Try it with fries and house-made ketchup. ($15)
National on 17th – Pork Burger
Made with pork shoulder that has been steeped in a brine for 24 hours, this burger is seared in pork fat and then topped with caramelized onions, apple-fennel slaw, arugula, and fontina cheese. It’s served on a brioche bun that has been slathered with a garlic aioli and a tomato jam. Yum. ($10)
